An alarm is one of the most effective treatments for nocturnal enuresis. It works by waking the child as soon as the first drops of urine are present , which allows the brain to gradually learn to recognize the signal of a full bladder during sleep.
Bedwetting: The Different Types of Enuresis
There are different types of enuresis.
- We speak of primary enuresis when the child has never been toilet trained.
- Secondary enuresis is defined as bedwetting problems that have been preceded by a period of at least 6 months during which the child was toilet trained.
Generally, secondary enuresis is due to a traumatic event for the child such as the arrival of a younger brother or sister, divorce, accident, starting school...
Primary enuresis is the most common form of enuresis and can be cured quite easily with appropriate treatment such as alarms.
We also distinguish between daytime enuresis, which involves urinary leakage at night, and nighttime enuresis, which involves urinary leakage at night.
