Urinary incontinence: some solutions to treat the problem

Today, incontinence affects more than 4 million people . And unfortunately, as it remains a taboo subject, those affected often don't dare talk about it. But if we want to understand and thus hope to resolve the problem, it's important to stay informed. That's why today we're shedding light on the subject by explaining what incontinence is and how it can be treated.

Urinary incontinence: what are we talking about?

Primarily caused by a dysfunction of the urinary system, this type of incontinence, as its name suggests, results in uncontrolled and involuntary leakage of urine. While it mainly affects women, incontinence can also occur in men, the elderly, and even children.

Several factors can accelerate the onset of this disorder, such as poor lifestyle habits (abuse of coffee, alcohol, tea, soft drinks, tobacco, etc.), excessive exercise, childbirth, menopause, illness, or even an accident.

Solutions for treating incontinence problems

There are various solutions to reduce, and sometimes even resolve, urinary incontinence. The main ones are:

  • Wearing incontinence pads: While this may be a source of embarrassment for many, this first solution will prevent the risk of stained pants. Furthermore, thanks to the wide variety of products available on the market today, you're likely to find pads that are both comfortable and discreet.
  • Medication: At this stage, only your doctor can prescribe appropriate treatment depending on the severity of your problem. However, be aware that taking medication can significantly help eliminate leaks.
  • Perineal rehabilitation: Generally prescribed to new mothers a few weeks after childbirth, it can also prove effective after the onset of menopause. It will then help to strengthen and tone the perineal muscles.
  • Surgery: The last resort, and certainly not the least, surgery proves to be the most radical. Several types of procedures exist, ranging from minor to major, depending on the specific problem. The decision to resort to such a method should therefore be carefully considered.

As you've probably gathered, incontinence can affect anyone, at any time. So, make an effort to adopt a healthy lifestyle, and if you're a woman, be sure to attend every session prescribed by your doctor. You'll feel much better and reduce your risk of developing incontinence! And above all, don't hesitate to make an appointment with your doctor, whether you have this type of problem or not, because only they can provide you with effective advice.
