Bedwetting Facts

Estimated Reading Time:

Bedwetting, also known as enuresis, is a disorder of urination control, not urination itself. Bedwetting is both a symptom and a pathological condition. Nocturnal bedwetting is said to be "isolated" if it is not associated with a daytime urination disorder. A distinction is made between: so-called "primary" enuresis when the problems were not preceded by a period of continence so-called secondary enuresis if the disorder was preceded by a period of continence of more than 6 months without any treatment. It is estimated that 80% of cases of enuresis are primary enuresis. The most common enuresis is therefore primary nocturnal enuresis, which alone accounts for 60 to 85% of urinary leaks in children. Boys are more affected by nocturnal enuresis than girls, reaching an estimated prevalence of between 6% and 10% at the age of 7. Its frequency drops to between 1 and 2% among 15-year-olds.
